How does a credit-based subscription work?

Overview

On a credit-based subscription, you buy a pot of credits that an unlimited number of users can spend on selected courses. Credits are only used when a learner actually starts a course, so you're paying for training that's used rather than seats that sit empty.

What you're buying

Your purchase gives you access to selected courses plus a pot of credits you can allocate however you choose. There's no cap on the number of users you can have on your LMS — you're paying for course starts, not people.

Your contract will be one of two types:

  • Open: access to all courses — users can be enrolled on any course.

  • Restricted: access only to the specific courses purchased as part of your contract.

How credits are spent

The number of credits a course costs depends on the course — usually between 3 and 10 credits. Credits are deducted the moment a learner starts a course, not when it's assigned, so enrolling someone doesn't cost anything until they begin.

A "course start" is counted when a learner logs in and begins a course, so their status changes to In Progress.

Retakes and fails: If a learner fails, they can retake the course at no extra charge. Credits are only charged again when a learner retakes a course after their certificate has expired, to earn a new one.

Topping up and rollover

If you run low, you can top up credits at any time — either directly in the LMS (open licences only) or by contacting your Client Development Manager. See How do I top up credits inside the platform?

Rollover: unused credits carry over automatically when you renew your contract. If there's a gap between contracts, your credits are reinstated once the new contract becomes active.

FAQ

Can I reassign a course between users without losing credits?

Yes, as long as the course hasn't been started yet. Reassigning doesn't affect your credit count until a user actually starts the course.

How do I track credit usage?

In your account there's a dashboard to help you monitor credit consumption over time. See How do credits and subscriptions work, and how do I track them?
